Fridge not cooling? 5 checks before you call: 1) temperature setting, 2) vents blocked by food, 3) door seal not closing, 4) dirty condenser coils, 5) ice maker or fan noise. If those don't fix it, the fault is usually a fan, thermostat, or compressor part that needs diagnosis — call before food spoils.
Door seals, hoses, pumps, and drains are the usual suspects. Turn off the water if it's flooding, mop up, and don't run it again until it's checked.
Washer won't drain? What it usually means: a blocked filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. Check the filter and hose first, then call — don't keep restarting a washer stuck in drain mode, as that pattern is commonly linked to a control-board fault on some models.
Repair or replace? How to decide without pressure: compare the repair cost to a comparable replacement, factor in the appliance's age and repair history, and ask for both numbers upfront. As a rule of thumb, a repair over about half the replacement price on a 10+ year old appliance often favours replacement — a single common part on a younger appliance usually favours repair.
Dryer takes too long? Check the vent first: clean the lint trap, check the vent hose for kinks or lint build-up, and check the outside vent flap. A blocked vent causes long dry times, overheating, and a burning smell. If the vent is clear and it still won't heat, the heating element, thermal fuse, or thermostat usually needs diagnosis.
